Fixtures, live scores and league tables are naturally tabular. One row

per match or per team, is great for working with in a spreadsheet.

Fantasy leagues, model spreadsheets, club analysis are all great ways to use the data in a spreadsheet.

In this tutorial we’ll look at how to go from blank sheet to useful app in a few steps.

What is the 5DollarFootball API?

It’s a plain REST/JSON API with the key in a header, no OAuth, or pagination required.

The free tier needs no card or anything to setup a nice sheet. It does have a rate limit for the moment.

It carries corner and card data, including corner-count league tables. Which can be hard to get from other APIs.

The API offers simple GET endpoints that make it easy to search and filter football data.

Step 1: Install Apipheny

If you haven’t already, install the Apipheny add-on from the Google Workspace Marketplace. Click Extensions > Add-ons > Get Add-ons, then search “Apipheny”

Apipheny extension in the Google Web Store

After installation:

  1. Open Google Sheets.

  2. Click Extensions > Apipheny > Import API.

  3. The Apipheny sidebar will open on the right side of your spreadsheet.

Step 2: Get your API token

To get your API token navigate to https://5dollarfootballapi.com/

  1. Click “Get Your Free API Key”

  2. Copy the value, it should look something like this:

fb_live_lsadfkhasckjh
  1. Add one new header. The first value is “Authorization”, the second value is “Bearer” then the value for your token:

    Bearer fb_live_lsadfkhasckjh
  2. Select GET as the request method, and add the query. eg:

    https://api.5dollarfootballapi.com/v1/standings?league=1&type=corner
  3. Click Run.

Apipheny will send the request and import the returned JSON data into your spreadsheet.

Step 3: Import Filtered Live Football Data

The API supports filtering results using query parameters.

For example, to retrieve only live games:

https://api.5dollarfootballapi.com/v1/fixtures?status=live

Alternatively if you want the corner data:

https://api.5dollarfootballapi.com/v1/standings?league=1&type=corner

Enter the URL into Apipheny and click Run.

The API will return only records that match the specified criteria.

The free tier covers the top-5 European leagues, leagues beyond that will return a 403 error.

Step 4: Save Your API Request

Once you have a request working correctly, you can save it for future use.

In Apipheny:

  1. Click Save Request.

  2. Give the request a name.

  3. Click Save.

Saved requests can be rerun at any time without re-entering the URL.

There you go, easy football data into Google Sheets.
